suffered a defeat today. michigan, the birthplace of the united auto workers, became the 24th right to work state. that means workers cannot be forced to join a union or pay union dues to get a job. the law was passed today by the republican legislature and signed by the governor. elaine quijano is in lancing for us tonight. >> right to work has got to go! >> reporter: union members from across michigan and other states voiced their anger at the michigan capital. mike huerta has been a member of the united auto workers union since 1997. >> no one wants this in this state. this state is where the birthplace of the united auto workers is, this place is where unions built the middle-class. >> reporter: but republican governor rick snyder insists the legislation will help workers by not forcing them to join unions or pay dues. >> if they don't see value in the union in terms of its activities, should they be forced to pay financial resources for that? i don't believe so. give them choice. >> reporter: the governor and republican lawmakers argue the legislation will attract businesses and keep j

? the presiding officer: the senator from michigan. ms. stabenow: thank you, mr. president. today i rise because middle-class families are counting on the house of representatives to do the right thing between now and the end of the year, which is just 19 days away for the house to pass the middle-class tax cuts that we sent them back in july. families need help. when we talk about fiscal cliff, the most important one is the -- what families are struggling with every day, and we only have 19 days until taxes on middle-class families go up by an average of $2,200 if the house of representatives doesn't act to make sure that 98% of the american public is protected from tax increases. as we know, we passed the middle-class tax cut act on july july 25. so far, the house has not acted. 19 days, they have 19 days until the end of this year in order to act. time is running out. country, a long-term plan for fiscal solvency and for our economy. and by the way, we'll never get out of debt with close to 12 million people out of work, so we better be focused on jobs and the economy as i am each and every d

states are implementing these conservative ideas. we see states like michigan join us. we do not force people to join unions and economies move and want to be a part of what is happening. when you get more parents choices of education, it tells all children, low-income children, we see it all over the country. we can prove it with research prepare. when states have the right for their own energy, the revenues that come into the government help build better roads, better schools, and keep taxes lower. that is an opportunity i hope we can have in south carolina. this could be more efficient and do much better than we can do under the federal area. the principles of freedom are working. we need to spot like them, a showcase them, communicate them so people see that these ideas work. at the same time, they're going to be able to look to washington and see that the ideas that emplace are dragging us down. when washington hits a wall, the friends of freedom in south carolina and all over the country are going to be ready not with political ideas of american ideas, ideas we now are working th
